Ethnic Enable
Finding out about the lives of disabled people from Black and ethnic minority communities
About this project
Ethnic Enable is a voluntary organisation run by disabled people for disabled people. It was established in 2003 to raise awareness about the needs of disabled people in the ethnic minority communities in Scotland. It provides information and support directly to disabled people themselves, and works alongside existing service providers to help them deliver relevant and culturally sensitive services to disabled people and their families.
Outside the Box has been helping Ethnic Enable complete a research project. We facilitated a workshop which brought together disabled people and their families from the BME communities, other disabled people and workers for a wide range of organisations. We also helped put the report together.
The research project looks at what people from Black and ethnic minority (BME) communities who are affected by disability need and find helpful. It also has information form other recent reports.
The report has suggestions for staff who work in the services in Scotland, to help them support patients or clients, their families and members of the public who they meet as part of their work. It has also has suggestions for people who are part of ethnic minority communities, to help them welcome and encourage the members of their communities who are disabled and their families.
